SVAS "Samatha Vidya Vyavasya Abhivrudhi Sankshema Sangham" is a voluntary organizatin located in Alamuru Town in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh
East Godavar District is endowed with fertile lands with irrigation through the river waters of Godavari. Vast expanses of land are covered by the rice fields. The main occupation of population is agriculture.
In spite of the rich natural resources, the region marks high disparities in income. Lands are concentrated in few hands and majority cotinues to depend on wage labour for survival. The caste differences are pronounced and the Dalit community suffers exploitation, unemployment and extreme poverty. SVAS has been steadily working over the last decade to organize and uplift the Dalit community.
During the course of its work,SVAS has attracted may like minded donors. It has earned a good reputation as an NGO working sincerely for the cause of the development of Dalits.
As a part of organizing Dalits, SVAS has promoted SHGs. More than 6000 members are part of the SHGs. The members save Rs. 30 to 50 per month regularly. The savings have been pooled as a revolving fund and provided as loans to members. SVAS strongly believes in cooperative principles and a non-profit approach. The SHGs have been federated into a Mutually Aided Cooperative Society.
The demand for loans members is increasing. The savings pool is not able to meet the required demand. SVAS has also realized that the loans give to members have been put to use productively and income of several families has grown up. SVAS would like to see more and more members benefit from the productive use of loans.
